~~Food Wastage in India~~

I was doing some search in google about Indian agriculture ,harvests methods and cultivation. How much ever pains our farmers put in harvesting the crops we lose million tonnes of produce due to lack of proper storage.

Got this from a site

Grain Drain: Why India Is Still Hungry
NATIONAL: In April-May this year, 2.2 lakh metric tonnes (mt) of wheat and rice lost in transit & storage, says govt. That’s enough to feed 12 lakh people for a year. Experts say loss could be higher
PUNJAB: 99.92 lakh mt of wheat out of 155 lakh mt stored in open
REASON Inadequate storage
RESULT: 5,300 mt wheat rots at Tarn Taran, more goes waste elsewhere in state

BIHAR: In 08-09, govt failed to procure 2 lakh tonnes of rice from farmers
REASON No godowns RESULT: Farmers unable to recover investments

ORISSA: Storage capacity is 7 lakh tonnes of rice and annual procurement target 55 lakh tonnes — a huge storage gap
RESULT: Distress sale by farmers

WEST BENGAL: Most of 57,770 mt of procured wheat stored in open. Not enough warehouses for fresh stock
RESULT: Tonnes of wheat goes waste

Something needs to be done !
